The LA Times runs some stories in the news section which might better be described as opinion or analysis; while some articles on the opinion page are rather informative… I see less of this confusion in small town papers.
Also, when it comes to the paper's editorial position (as expressed on the Editorial page), Large papers like the LA Times seem to have shallow, poorly thought out Editorials, while smaller papers have more intelligent and thoughtful Editorials. I'm not saying this because I agree or disagree with them; I've noticed this no matter which side of an issue they take.
